A review of treatments performed at Washington University and its affiliated cancer center found that laser therapy provided a measurable survival benefit for people with recurrent glioblastoma compared with standard chemotherapy. Although the improvement averaged about two additional months, researchers emphasized that even small gains matter for patients with limited options. The therapy was used both for tumors that had returned after initial treatment and for tumors considered inoperable due to their location. The analysis included dozens of procedures performed over several years, demonstrating that the technique can be applied safely across a range of clinical scenarios.
Laser therapy also offers advantages for patients whose tumors cannot be removed surgically without risking major neurological impairment. By using MRI to monitor heat distribution during the procedure, clinicians can precisely control the treatment zone and avoid damaging critical brain structures. This level of precision is not possible with conventional surgery or radiation, making the technique a promising option for difficult‑to‑access tumors.
Researchers note that while laser therapy is not a cure for aggressive brain cancers, it represents an important step toward improving outcomes for patients with few remaining choices.
