In emergency trauma situations, time is critical. Severe bleeding can lead to death within minutes, and administering lifesaving drugs quickly is often difficult in chaotic environments. Researchers at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem have developed a new autoinjector that delivers tranexamic acid (TXA) rapidly and effectively, offering a major advancement in pre-hospital care.
TXA is a well-established medication that helps stabilize blood clots and reduce bleeding. It is commonly used in hospitals and trauma centers, but its effectiveness depends on how quickly it is administered. Intravenous delivery is the standard method, yet it requires trained personnel and can be challenging in field conditions such as combat zones, roadside accidents, or natural disasters.
The new autoinjector solves this problem by allowing TXA to be delivered intramuscularly with minimal training. In a study conducted with the IDF Medical Corps, the device was tested in a porcine model of uncontrolled hemorrhage. Results showed that therapeutic levels of TXA were reached in less than five minutes, and the drug performed as well as IV administration in stabilizing blood pressure and promoting clot formation.
This rapid delivery is crucial for improving survival rates. The device is designed to be simple, portable, and intuitive, making it suitable for use by non-medical responders. Whether in military settings or civilian emergencies, the autoinjector could enable immediate treatment before professional help arrives.
The researchers also evaluated the pharmacokinetics of the drug, confirming that intramuscular TXA maintains stable concentrations over time. This consistency ensures that patients receive an effective dose without the need for complex monitoring or follow-up injections.
Beyond trauma, the technology may have applications in surgical recovery, postpartum hemorrhage, and other conditions where rapid clot stabilization is needed. The team is exploring ways to adapt the device for different drugs and dosing regimens, further broadening its impact.
